George Orwell's 1984In the beginning of George Orwell’s 1984, the readers are introduced to Winston and he shares his intellectual love for O’Brien, a Party member, who is high up in the social class in Oceania (Orwell 11). We see the unfairness and unjustness between the selected Party members and the rest of the town since the beginning of the book. Party members in Oceania receive more privileges-no cameras in their homes-since they are loyal to the government and believe everything it tells its citizens (Orwell 3). Winston, however, since he works in the Ministry of Truth, he seems all the lies being created and all the history being altered (Orwell 4). Winston admires O’Brien and the two seem to get closer as friends throughout the book, because Winston is under the impression that O’Brien is willing to be a part of his plan to take down the Party from the inside. As the book progresses, we see O’Brien betrays Winston and his plan to “take down” the Party. Orwell’s novel ends with Winston being “brainwashed” within Room 101 and learns to love the Party and everything it stands for after being tortured with his biggest fear, rats (Orwell 285).

Comparison
These women behind #BlackLivesMatter, like Winston from 1984, are using their voices to stand up for those treated, in their eyes, unfairly and unjustly-more specifically African Americans. Winston in 1984, gathered a group, Julia & O’Brien, to help him take down the Party, similar to Cullors, Tometi, Garza gathering a community to support this issue of inequality. Although these three ladies think that this group will eventually help society, especially the black community, this movement might not do as much good as bad. In 1984 we see that Winston eventually gets caught for his wrongdoings and is ultimately punished (Orwell 297). Like in 1984, I believe that these women will soon realize that this group is only dividing our nation and drawing more attention to an issue that doesn’t seem to really exist; there is not racial nor police brutality against specific ethnic groups.
