George Orwell’s, 1984, a novel written about a dystopian society where the government, or Big Brother, is watching everyone. In the novel the main character Winston starts off feeling indifferent towards the society as a whole but as the story goes on you see multiple conflict being to arise. Some conflicts seen are the fight between himself and the government. He is limited in our basic human rights being, freedom of speech, thought and privacy. The government has taken every one of these rights away wanting to only leave the memory and thought of fear and torture in the citizens minds. Along with taking away the people’s natural freedom the government does not allow events of the past to pop up in conversation in the present or near future. The government causes the older citizens to second guess themselves and wonder if an event in the past had actually happened or if they were making it up all along. These two major conflicts are also seen in the movement of “Black Lives Matter”. This movement has been caused by the overwhelming amount of fall outs between a black citizen and a white official. The way that this compares to George Orwell's “1984” is seen through the way the news portrays the consistent issues between the power hungry police and the black victims. On Fox news, a known conservative station, the writers continue to use the phrases such as, “Violent protests”, “attacked an officer” and others diminishing the police brutality. While more liberal websites or black lives matter websites will portray the situation in a much different manner. Instead of using violent protests they will use “Activists” or “Sign of defense”. The way stations like Fox write about these situations are similar to “1984” and the government warping the way events have occurred. This is similar to oppression seen in the dystopian society. The conservative oppression of black activist speaking their mind and opinions is parallel to the lack of freedom of speech in “1984”.
